One Hero, The People

One Hero, The People (Un Seul Héros, le Peuple) tells the story of a victorious popular uprising. In 1960, facing militarized repression, Algeria’s working-class populations—with women and children sometimes on the front lines—surged forth from shantytowns and segregated neighborhoods. They thwarted the counter-insurgency and upended the colonial order. It is also the story of oppressed bodies liberating themselves through dance.
